Private Equity? Venture Capital?? Unicorns??? Betty Liu explains | Money in :60 | GZERO Media

Hi, I’m Betty Liu with your Money In 60 Seconds. First question: So, let’s talk first about the similarities between a VC and a PE firm. So, they both raise capital to invest in private companies, generally are limited partnerships, and they help increase the value of companies in order to exit them. Now, VC firms, though, tend to invest in younger stage companies and startups, whereas PE firms take majority stakes in companies and those are usually mature businesses. What they do is they look for operational and cost efficiencies to make those businesses profitable. So, that term was coined back in the early 2010s to identify companies that were valued or are valued at more than a billion dollars. In 2019, there were 142 unicorns, 78 of them in the US. That’s your Money In 60 Seconds.

Sorry Sofia the robot I didn't mean to upset you.
Unicorn was coined as a f**** corny as term.
No of real unicorns existed, that would be pretty interesting. That wouldn't it?
A lot of these people didn't become unicorns because they were actually nice they became unicorns cuz they were cut throat wolves.

Do you think they did it out of honesty?
I don't think they did have complete honesty to be honest with you.
Cuz capitalism is not a real socio-economic system.
Well, it can be if you believe that s***.
But knowing the true cost and knowing what goes behind the scenes is different than just saying. Hey, here's a unicorn.
